Kalapuya

The Indigenous people of the Willamette Valley, including the Chifin band of the Eugene area.

The first people to settle the Eugene area were the Chifin band of the Kalapuya, who moved through the seasons to gather acorns, camas and wapato. Other Kalapuyan groups, the Pee-you, Winefelly and Lungtum, had villages inside what is now Eugene. Most survivors of the nineteenth-century epidemics and settlement were moved to the Grand Ronde reservation in 1856.
